Welcome

As some of you already know Ann Hobson Pilot, the distinguished principal harpist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is retiring at the end of the 2009 Tanglewood season after 40 years with the orchestra. In the music world, she is a trailblazer and a star; in the harp world, she is an icon. As a teacher and human being, she is nothing less than exceptional. Her lifetime of remarkable achievement deserves more than mere mention.

In 1998, Producer Susan Dangel created a documentary called “Ann Hobson Pilot: A Musical Journey”. Airing on PBS stations nationwide from 1998 to 2001, the film focused on Ann’s trip to Africa to perform as a soloist with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra and to explore the origins of the harp.

Now, at the conclusion of a remarkable career, a further profile of Ann’s legacy is in order so that this powerful story of accomplishment, dedication, and inspiration is passed on to future generations. The Advisory Board and Executive Producer Susan Dangel invite you to join them in creating a second documentary that will tell the compelling story of how a young African American musician overcame both racial and gender barriers to become one of the best harpists in the world.

In addition to recounting and exploring Ann's career, the film will include both rehearsal and performance footage from the upcoming BSO concerts in which Ann performs the premier of a John Williams concerto composed in her honor, James Levine conducting. We believe that this will be a film of musical, cultural, and historical significance, and one that will be of particular educational value and inspirational to younger generations of color.
